What is education?

According to Oxford Dictionary Of English it is a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges to improve knowledge and develop skills.

Imagine the world without education… Would we have any lawyers, doctors, engineers or zoologists? What kind of a world would we live in? Imagine a chaotic environment with uneducated people, no new technological inventions or innovations to improve our day to day living. We’d still be travelling long distances by feet or using horses or donkeys. We’d die day by day because of diseases that we cannot identify or find a cure for. The world would be crumbling down because life is not only about surviving. We also need to learn and grow no matter if it fast or slow.

We now live in a digital world, almost everything uses technology. We are more advanced in such a way that there are online classes to accommodate those who can’t physically attend classes. Why would we have this alternative if education wasn’t so important? Your accessories, clothes and money can be stolen from you but I assure you that no one can steal your education. Knowledge. Wisdom and power.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This is one of the most powerful quotes by the first black president of South Africa, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela who also believed that education can empower a mind of man and also boost his intelligence towards creating a better future for himself and a better country for all.

Getting into South African history, advanced education was one of the things that people fought for. The reason why we celebrate Youth Day is mainly because of the struggle for better education. Many people died (Hector Peterson included) and so much blood was shed during that struggle, therefore education is also an important part of our history.

Moving on, it can also widen one’s chances of getting employed in a well paying and permanent positions or creating job opportunities by kick-starting their own firms. That alone contributes highly on decreasing unemployment rates. It also teaches teenagers and young adults to be responsible and to stay off the streets that could lead them to crime or drugs. Less poverty by educating the youth and less crime by an educated society, killing two birds with one stone.

I for one thinks that education is quite valuable in any person’s life hence anyone who has obtained it is of great value to our country and its economy.
